How to Choose a Dance Studio for Kids

Dance classes are a great way to build your child’s confidence and teach her discipline.  Before she can begin enjoying the benefits of classes, though, you need to enroll her in classes at a studio.  Finding the right studio is critical to your child’s safety, as well as her success in dance classes.  Thus, it is necessary that you follow some guidelines when looking for a dance studio.

Class Sizes

First, look for a dance studio with small class sizes.  Children are easily distracted, and if you choose a studio with large classes, your child will spend her time playing instead of learning.  If you want your child to become serious about dance, small class sizes are necessary.

Instructor Experience

Next, look at the teacher’s experience level.  Inexperienced instructors teach poor techniques to their students.  Once a child learns the wrong technique, it can be very difficult to break her of her bad habits.  This can plague your child for the rest of her time as a dancer.  Instructors should have a degree in dance from an accredited college or experience as a professional dancer.  Do not settle for anything less.

Dance Studio Floor

After you check the instructor’s experience level, you need to examine the studio’s floor.  Dancing on the wrong type of floor can lead to a serious injury.  Try to find a studio with a floating floor, as this is the safest flooring type.  If you cannot find a studio with a floating floor, choose a studio with floors that are hard enough to support your child, but soft enough to prevent damage to her joints.

Likeable Teachers

Once you find a studio with the proper floor, you need to observe the dance class and see how the instructor interacts with her students.  If the teacher is unlikable, it will be difficult for your child to enjoy dancing.  Thus, make sure the instructor is positive and helpful, and doesn’t yell at the children.

Recitals

Lastly, attend a recital.  While having fun may be the primary goal, you still want your child to do well in her dance classes.  Unfortunately, your child can only do as well as the program will allow.  See how the dancers perform in the recital.  If they are unorganized and lack enthusiasm, choose another studio.  There are countless studios available, and you will find one that meets all of your criteria, and still puts on a good recital.

Choosing the right studio is necessary if your child is going to enjoy and excel at dancing.  Take your time and find a studio that will be a good fit for your child.  Then, enroll her in the program so she can enjoy the benefits of dancing
