MDAA's Full History
Since its founding in 1969, Montana Dance Arts Association (MDAA) members have contributed thousands of hours and abundant expertise in developing and promoting the art of dance in Montana. MDAA is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) statewide organization comprised of over 350 teachers and students, with a 6-member volunteer Board of Directors. MDAA conducts semi-annual dance workshops, student scholarship adjudication, and promotes professional development. Also, MDAA either co-sponsors or encourages performances of major dance companies statewide.
MDAA holds a set of two conferences each year in April and October that draw more than 200 participants each, offering study in ballet, jazz, tap, and modern dance given by professional dancers and teachers, many with international credentials. These events take place in Missoula, Great Falls, or Bozeman. Through these opportunities MDAA provides Montana's young dancers and their instructors with training and experiences they would otherwise not receive unless they traveled out-of-state.
During these workshops, four instructors travel to Montana to award scholarships to candidates on the basis of merit and a demonstration of high levels of proficiency and creativity. One of MDAA's most successful and important activities is the annual awarding 30 or more competitive summer tuition scholarships, solicited from major dance studios around the country and state, during the April workshop. Through this nationally unique program, some participants have gone on to pursue professional dance careers; others have simply enhanced their lives with the fine dance experiences MDAA scholarships provided.
In 1988 a $5,000 grant from the Seidman Foundation created the nucleus for a permanently endowed scholarship fund, interest from which is used to purchase additional scholarships. In a typical year, scholarship recipients may travel to Boston, Chicago, New York, Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City, or Los Angeles. Regardless of motives or degrees of training, all benefit in the pursuit of personal goals through MDAA's scholarship program.
In 1986, MDAA contracted with Montana Arts for administrative services, including conference preparation, bookkeeping, grant proposal writing, scholarship solicitation and administration, membership list maintenance, newsletter publication and mailing, and general correspondence. Services Montana Arts provides have greatly enhanced MDAA's ability to serve Montana's statewide dance constituency and has increased the number of scholarships awarded from just 5 in 1986 to 43 in 2004.
